Description
An enormous lizard with a large head, short neck, and a long tail. The creature is 20' long from nose to hindquarters with a tail of similar length. It has two special abilities. The first is legend, the paralyzing gaze. This acts an Immobilize Person/Creature spell with a range of 50', an AOE of Point (as single victim), and a D4 duration. The second special ability is the Tail Whip, a type of attack. The Tail Whip swings through a 180 degree arc parallel to one side of the creature's body (see tactics) in a 20' radius, doing D6+6 damage and 20 points of Knockback. The Speed of the Attack is 15/25 where the lower number of segments represents a "loaded" speed (tail held high) typical of the creature in combat while the higher number is the "reload" speed.
Tactics
The Basilisk is a territorial apex predator. It is mesothermic (between warm blooded and cold blooded) and only needs to hunt once a week. It will use its keen sense of smell to catch wind of prey, then hunt them down. The Basilisk will draw attention to itself with a roar when close (50' or less), fixing its victim with its golden-eyed stare, then charge before the poor creature can break the paralysis to escape near certain doom. The monster prefers to pounce like a gargantuan cat on a single prey, pinning it with its powerful foreleg claws and biting off its head or severing its spine. If facing pesky smaller creatures trying to distract it from its meal, the Basilisk may appear to be turning away, presenting its long flank to the enemy, but it is really setting up for a devastating tail whip. That long, muscular 20' appendage swings down from on high through an arc that begins directly behind the creature, sweeps along one flank and finishes at its nose. The creature will never turn fully away from an enemy unless retreating (or done with its meal).
